Kirindy Forest

To the north of Morondava is Kirindy Forest, made up of 10,000 hectares of dry deciduous forest.

On this flat, sandy terrain, visitors can enjoy day and night walks, guided from the local accommodation, Camp Amoureaux. Recently opened and well recommended, you can enjoy this permanent tented camp whilst exploring the forest.

The best time for wildlife watching is from September to November. It is the best place to seek out the mysterious fosa, the largest predator of Madagascar.

Visitors experience extremely rewarding nocturnal walks around spring and summer, as Kirindy Forest is home to an extensive variety of nocturnal lemur including the smallest primate, Madame Berthe’s mouse lemur.

There are many birds unique to the dry forest that can be seen in Kirindy Forest, as well as reptiles, such as the enormous Oustalet’s chameleon.

Outside of Kirindy Forest is the spectacular Alley of Giant Baobabs. This is one of the country’s World Heritage Sites and a national monument.
