I’ve just returned from a fabulous trip in the KwaZulu-Natal region of South Africa, and what a great adventure it was. First stop Makakatana Lodge in the area of Lake St Lucia, a family owned and run lodge extending warm hospitality and a lovely homely feel. A unique experience in this region is a ride on the lake in a Mokoro ( dug out canoe) affording time to enjoy the beautiful scenery and many stunning birds from the tranquility of the lake. We were lucky enough to witness a Kingfisher dive into the water right in front of us! Next morning we were off for a boat ride on the lake to enjoy breakfast with the hippos, there are over 1000 of them living in the lake so sightings are guaranteed. Next stop Umfolozi Game Reserve, home to the Big 5, and overnight at the stunning Mthembu Lodge. Mthembu and sister lodge Biyella are new properties and really bring luxurious comfort to a fantastic safari experience. We were fortunate enough here to get very close to a massive Bull Elephant, one of the rare occasions our group was stunned into complete silence!! Our third game lodge was Thanda Tented Camp, again home to the Big 5 and a lovely way to experience Tented accommodation. Highlights here were coming across a Pride of 11 Lion all sleeping in the afternoon and getting really close to a beautiful giraffe, who clearly thought he was a super model and posed beautifully for us. The evening was rounded off with a Bush BBQ and great conversation with our guide and tracker as they told us much about the Zulu traditions.
Our fourth stop was Fugitives Drift and a tour of the Anglo Zulu Battlefields. Our first walk was to Rorke’s Drift where we learnt something of the war from the British side, followed the next morning by visiting where the battle of Isandlwanda had taken place. Our guide was a great grandson of a Zulu warrior and his words combined with the fact that we were standing right where this battle took place brought it all too clearly to life in a highly emotive way. I would highly recommend this stopping point to anyone.
From here we headed to the utterly delightful Three Tree Hill Lodge, overlooking Spioenkop Game Reserve, midway between Johannesburg and Durban and with the Drakensberg mountains as the backdrop. Another privately owned and run lodge, we could not have felt more at home. Warmly welcomed we then headed out for a stunning sundowner followed by a delightful dinner where much of the produce is locally grown. The following morning some of us enjoyed a trail ride on the family’s horses, but on a longer stay I would suggest taking a Battlefield tour with the owner who is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the local area, history and customs, a full day in the Drakensberg Mountains or a guided walk in the National Park.
We then headed to Montusi located at the base of The Drakensberg Mountains. This is a beautiful property with fantastic accommodation, individual units with 1 or 2 bedrooms for couples or families. We took the easy walk to the Cave Waterfall but there are several walking options on the property itself or you can easily head into the mountains from here.
The final night of our trip was at the utterly delightful boutique hotel The Oyster Box in Durban. Privately owned it is easy to see why this hotel enjoys such huge repeat business. It manages to combine a distinctly colonial feel with touches of contemporary and quite uniquely this hotel will appeal to absolutely anyone. Based in the city it is also on the beach with many restaurants within walking distance and a huge shopping mall just a few minutes drive away. We experienced their renowned curry lunch ( which very much lived up to expectations) and in the evening we dined a la carte in The Grill Room. Not only was our meal an absolute treat but we were attended to by Henry who has worked in the hotel for 55 years and is himself an icon. A must in this restaurant is the Crepes Suzettes cooked at the table by Henry himself in his ancient trusted copper pan!
With a sense of sadness we left The Oyster Box for our BA flight home. Goodbye for now South Africa you have been a blast!

South Africa continues:-
Leave Makakatana, 2.5 hours to Hluhluwe game reserve and the Umfolozi Mthembu lodge, west of St Lucia.
A newly opened modern lodge, concrete exterior, which blends perfectly with the environment, but modern interior for that classic luxury safari feel. Each room is facing the bush, along wooden bridged pathways, lite by night only by fire lanterns.
Eloquent food and drinks and a warm welcome.
This game drive will see many of the big 5, up close and personal.

Jane is on a wonderful South Africa trip visiting a different lodge, conservation area and historical discovery for 8 nights. I will post the experiences she is having on a regular basis over the next few days.
Today she arrived here at Makakatana in the St Lucia lake western shores, just 2.5 hours from Durban.
Today she will embark on a Makoros, which is a two man boat moved by a long stick to view hippos, crocs and birds.🦛🐊🦅
Later she will venture out for a Jeep safari.
Pictures of the room and mealtime to follow.

I hope you enjoy following her over the next 8 days.

Western Australia.

Fly to Perth and visit the West Coast of Australia.

Taking up almost a third of the continent, the state of Western Australia is huge; in fact, if it was its own country it would be the tenth biggest country in the world - larger than India!

There are lots of things to be discovered here. Ningaloo Reef is the worlds largest fringing reef, and Perth is the sunniest state capital, with an annual average of 8.8 hours a day. Elsewhere in the state, you’ll also be able to explore the country’s largest stretch of outback and walk along The whitest sand in Australia at Lucky Bay.

Perth offers a relaxed atmosphere, and combines a sleek and modern skyline with plenty of beautiful flora and fauna; the leafy and vast Kings Park is actually bigger than New York’s iconic Central Park and is the perfect green oasis in the heart of the city.

If you’re visiting between July and November, you might be in with a chance to spot some of the 35,000 whales that migrate past Western Australia’s shores each year. Elsewhere, explore Victorian and Edwardian architecture in Fremantle, enjoy a relaxing afternoon of wine tasting in the Swan Valley or the Margaret River region, or discover some of this region’s incredible marine wildlife at Monkey Mia. For some of the most breathtaking natural views in the world, Western Australia has it all, rugged scenery, desert landscapes, spectacular rivers, amazing vineyards and vegetation and a modern vibrant Perth City.

To start planning your bespoke getaway to Western Australia, speak to Jane or Nick (who have visited Western Australia three times) for a tailor made quote.
