South East Coast

On the south east tip of Madagascar lies the sleepy fishing village, Manafiafy.

Flanked by forest which is home to the mouse, brown, dwarf and sportive lemurs, the waters around this village are calm and provide safe anchorage, due to the protection of the small islands off the coast.

For those fond of reptiles, there are plenty to be found in this area, including snakes, geckos and chameleons. The birds are also excellent in the area.

The coral reefs just offshore are rich with marine life and humpback whales can be seen in the bay from mid June to December.

The beach of Manafiafy is arguably the most attractive beach in the country.

Visitors to the south east coast can take cruises into the mangroves or walk in the littoral forest, where rare lemurs can be found.

Manafiafy is the location of the boutique lodge, Manafiafy Beach and Rainforest Lodge, which is popular amongst Madagascar’s visitors. This luxury, solar powered lodge has six beach bungalows built amongst lush bush on the coast of an exquisite bay.
