The
Splendido is an ancient villa that overlooks the spectacular bay and
tiny harbour of Portofino on the Italian Riviera. Set on the hillside
in four acres of romantic tropical gardens and superb palm trees, this
magnificent luxury villa was transformed into a de luxe hotel in 1901
and became one of Europe's legendary resorts. Originally a Benedictine
monastery, the building was attacked with such frequency in the
sixteenth century by Saracen pirates that the monks abandoned it to
the sheep that roamed the coastal hills. In the nineteenth century,
Baron Baratta restored the ruins, converting it into a family summer
residence. In 1985 Orient-Express Hotels bought the hotel and
implemented a renovation project. All rooms have since been completely
redecorated and refurbished.
